The Alternative Investment Market (AIM) is a sub-market of the London Stock Exchange, allowing smaller companies to float shares with a more flexible regulatory system than is applicable to the main market. Created in 1995, AIM has raised approximately £60bn for more than 3,000 companies. Over 250 companies are from outside the United Kingdom.
Many companies have moved from AIM to the main market since its inception, but in recent times the move has been the other way, due to the lighter regulation and the significant tax advantages available to investors of an AIM listed company. A requirement of AIM listing is continuous oversight by a company’s adviser, known as the Nominated Adviser (NOMAD). The role of the NOMAD is central to AIM’s regulatory model, acting as gatekeeper, adviser, and regulator.
