David Venus was invited to address newly qualified company secretaries at the recent ICSA annual graduation ceremony
"I count myself very lucky to have been a member of the Institute for the last 35 years and have had, and continue to have, an enjoyable and stimulating working life that I wouldn't change for any other job or profession. We have, of course, seen plenty of changes over the years – some good and some bad – but all in all I believe the prospects and opportunities for chartered secretaries today are better than at any time during my career. Indeed, for many years I think we have perhaps often been perceived as poor relations to accountants and lawyers. This has been partly due to our lack of profile and to the general public's lack of understanding about what we do, but also to what has been often viewed as the rather unglamorous and narrow confines of company law. This is no longer so, however. There is now a greater awareness of the role of the company secretary and, more importantly, a recognition by the vital constituency ofdirectors, fellow professionals and investors of the important role that we play.
David Venus had the honour of delivering a speech at the ICSA Graduation and Membership Ceremony on 4 June at Merchant Taylor’s Hall in London. Having qualified back in 1974, David drew on his vast experience to offer some words of inspiration to the most recent members of this increasingly important profession, speaking enthusiastically about the opportunities, as well as the responsibilities, that lie ahead.
